Which artist painted pictures that made the world look so decorative? and other questions.?

Hey there! I'm really stuck on this because i have got an art exam and I need to find out about a history of an artist that made the world look so decorative. I'm not sure whether it is Monet. Pls help me out.

Also, if you know anything about wat makes this world so decorative e.g:landscapes, colours, etc. pls let me know.

Pls tell me great ways how 2 do well in making a picture look real. ThxsWhich artist painted pictures that made the world look so decorative? and other questions.?
I think I'm too late. Perhaps by the time you read this answer your art exam is already finished. Anyway, I believe it's Michaelangelo. He was a great painter and sculptor. He painted the ceiling of Rome's Sistine Chapel, sculpted the hot and luscious (*laughs*) David, sculpted The Pieta, etc.

Just google Michaelangelo and you'll get thousands of links. They will all tell you that he's contributed much in our world's history and arts.

Nature and human emotion makes this world a mixture of pure beauty and pure ugliness. It's too deep of a topic to discuss in one seating Rose.

To make a picture look real, choose your subject, the emotion you want to project, have a good camera though not necessarily pricey, just click and click. Practice makes perfect dear. And continue learning and researching about any subject. That will make it look perfect and real.

I hope you did well on your exam.Which artist painted pictures that made the world look so decorative? and other questions.?
Vincent Van Gogh was a great artist in my opinion,

He is very famous as well.

Theres a gallery just for him i pasted below.

hope it helped out! :-D

What is the best way to remove paint from decorative iron railing?

I have decorative iron railing on my front porch and flat roof that has a ridiculous amount of paint on it that has never been stripped. I have taken a grinder to the parts that I can get to, however, that is only about 30% with all of the swirls and s-curves being too tight to get the grinder in.

I would prefer to not use any sort of chemical stripper, but if that is the best method, then so be it. There are about 8-10 layers of paint. It has flaked and chipped all over the place, but has simply been painted over (and over and over) throughout the years.

Any suggestions?What is the best way to remove paint from decorative iron railing?
if it's not up against a wood surface you can use a propane torch %26amp; a wire brushWhat is the best way to remove paint from decorative iron railing?
You could go down to your hardware store and buy yourself a cheap sand blaster for about $20.00 and some sand and sand blast it off.You would have to shield the surrounding area so you don't take off the paint that you don't want off. I do it all of the time.O! The $20.00 doesn't include an air compressor. You do need one of those also. Sorry.
you have several options.

1. sandblaster

2. pressure washer

3 scrape it off and sand it back

4. CHEMICALS%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; but not the ones you think. Easy off oven cleaner will take the paint off. Spray it with a pressure hose after soaking it in oven cleaner for two or three hours. you may have to reapply a few times depending on how much paint is on there.
The best method would be something like a stripper and then hose it off, you might have to let it set and then give it several coats. I use E-Z stripper is good from Ace Hardware.
I tried chemicals and it was a mess. It worked but try to avoid it if possible. Try a dremel tool with brush.

    My question is does anyone know of a good tempera paint that won't peel?

    The paint I used to use isn't being manufactured anymore. I could use acrylic paint but it would have to be scraped off and most clients don't want to bother. I would do it myself but I do over 200 paintings in a 6 week period and don't have time to clean them off for people. I used paint from Michaels but it's very gritty. I bought some other paint online and it peeled off after about a week. The paintings need to stay intacked for about 2 to 3 months. Home decorative paint color ideas?

    So, I figure there are probabaly a lot more people out there with much more decorative skills than I have. My fiancee and I moved into our first house last year, and we plan to soon move our attention from the yard to the inside. The same color was painted pretty much throughout the house. I would like to get some opinions on two rooms...The family/living room, and dining room.

    Key points: The color on the wall is a neutral light brown tanish color and the floors are an off white tile.

    So for the family room, all we really have in there is a large dark wood entertainment center with high shelves and the TV etc, a matching wood table in the center of the room, a light chocolaty brown couch with a dark wood sofa table behind it. There are also two nice lamps with the same type of colors. The problem here is that we are getting into too much browns, and I'm not sure what will be a good way to spice it up. We would like some color, nothing too crazy since we spend a lot of time in there. There is also a large window in the room (no curtains or anything yet) and we plan to add a large nice fake tree. Has anyone had a similar dilemma? Or have any colors, suggestions to recommend?

    For the dining room, it is a similar story. Same wall/floor color, with a dark wood table. We added a darker greenish colored curtain to the two windows, as well as matching placemats and napkins. We were thinking of possibly painting this room darker, maybe a darker brown color? Or dark maroonish color? Again, any suggestions?

    I lack decorative skills, and tend to lean towards the clean, sharp look. But that doesn't leave much room for color, so I need the suggestions.

    Thanks in advance.Home decorative paint color ideas?
    How about adding blue to the family room. Not a very loud blue, but a cool calming blue (that probably has a hint of gray in it). This color would look very good w/ the browns/tans that you already have. Try having a feature wall. Leave the other walls the existing color and pick a wall to paint blue or better yet, add horizontal or vertical stripes that consist of tan and blue.

    Then you can accessorize. Try getting pillows that have dark brown, blue, and tan. Get other decor items in different shades of blue. Dark brown wall sconces are a good idea (use blue candles) and you can get a nice area rug as well with the different shades in it.

    For the dining room, I wouldn't necessary paint the entire room with one very dark color. But if you'd like to have a dark color in there, do the same as I suggested with the family room and have a feature wall with the color. Also buy accessories in that color as well. But definitely include a light or medium color in the room to make it more inviting.

    These a just a few ideas to help you get moving, so I hope this helps.Home decorative paint color ideas?

    Has any one painted their basement floor in a decorative pattern.?

    We are finishing our basement but cannot afford flooring, any ideas?Has any one painted their basement floor in a decorative pattern.?
    One of the prettiest concrete floors I've ever seen was in a quilt store - they had made it look like quilts were lying around here and there - they had just used stencils.

    One of the old diners in our town redid their floors, scraped up years of linoleum, and they painted back what looked like alternating black and red tiles.

    I have a friend who paints murals - she did a basement play room - parts of it were set up for the little girl and it was just like a mini-house and then a mall, and the other end was done up for a boy with a race track and hiking trails. She also did a million dollar home - they wanted to keep everything natural - but the basement was an issue as they had this beautiful all woodfloored home, etc. and then this gray concrete - she painted a large Persian rug and then what looked like wood flooring at the outer edges.

    So, just start looking at various flooring plans and then you can probably paint whatever you decide.Has any one painted their basement floor in a decorative pattern.?
    My husband built a garage for a customer who wanted to use the space more like a porch. She rolled on a solid color of floor enamel, then taped off a grid of squared with masking tape. Then she spattered paint all over the floor with a darker color. When the tape was removed, it looked like a tile floor!

    What the best colors to paint an elementary classroom?Is there any decorative ideas or pictures?

    For walls you should go with bright blues, greens and yellows, they are all colors from nature. Then add accents of reds, oranges and purples. Make sure your classroom has plenty of natural lighting also.

    I would never introduce commercial characters as decorations for a classroom. Students art and works should decorate the room. Allow plenty of areas for those items.What the best colors to paint an elementary classroom?Is there any decorative ideas or pictures?
    I would paint each of the four walls a differenct color. Two girl colors (red/purple) and two boy colors (blue/green). Should make everyone happy.What the best colors to paint an elementary classroom?Is there any decorative ideas or pictures?
    Always go with a bright color, never dull. To make children feel welcome and safe in the class. As for decorations go to your nearest Teahing Shop (I think most cities have them, at least i do). Their should be fun characters with happy faces which you can wright on with special pens. Try looking online if you cant find a shop nearest you.

    *Too make your kids seem more into the class room you can paint their hands, put it on a long stretch of paper, and post it on the wall. Class of XX - XX*
    Depends on the style. Ask yourself this question: Do you want a comfortable room or modern room?

    A modern classroom should have light colors. I suggest for the tables, you use wood with light colors such as basic maple or cognac cherry. The tables should have metal or plastic stands. Plain light brown or light orange would be fine for the wall. The teacher's desk should be in the middle so everyone can see and a blackboard behind it.

    A comfy classroom, I suggest, should have carpet on it. I think dark blue carpet is fine but it's upto you. The tables should be wooden, light or dark depends on the wallpaper. The stands should be wooden too. The walpaper, I think, should have dark-brownish color. I don't think that dark-brownish color matches the carpet, so maybe if you make the wallpaper dark-brownish, the carpet should match it like yellow or light brown or something. The teacher's desk seems more comfy if it's in the corner of the room and the blackboard still in the middle of the class just like a modern one. Curtains are nice but it'll be dark so don't forget the lamps!

    You don't have to choose either one of them, you can choose both if you want to! Make it both modern and comfy, and there are other themes like fancy, colorful (that is perfect for grade 1 or 2 students).

    Paintings and wall hangings are nice, but for a classroom, posters are better. The type of poster depends on the grade, like grade 1 can have a ';Weathers and Seasons'; poster, grade 3 can have a ';Simple Machines'; poster, and so on. Make sure that the posters just don't hang anywhere, but it should hang up on somewhere where it's not so ';unusual';. I mean, if there's a big wall with nothing on it and you just put a picture in the middle, it would look as if...well...too ';alone';.
    something educational, has to do with the educational level. Numbers, shapes, numerical signs.
    It all depends on the mood you want in your classroom. Colors have psychology behind them...

    Blue is the overwhelming ';favorite color.'; Blue is seen as trustworthy, dependable and committed. The color of sky and the ocean, blue is perceived as a constant in our lives. As the collective color of the spirit, it invokes rest and can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming; however not all blues are serene and sedate. Electric or brilliant blues become dynamic and dramatic, an engaging color that expresses exhilaration. Some shades or the overuse of blue may come across as cold or uncaring. Blue is the least ';gender specific'; color, having equal appeal to both men and women.

    How the color blue effects us physically and mentally

    * Calming and sedate

    * Cooling

    * Aids intuition

    Green occupies more space in the spectrum visible to the human eye and is second only to blue as a favorite color. Green is the pervasive color in the natural world that is an ideal backdrop in interior design because we are so used to seeing it everywhere. The natural greens, from forest to lime, are seen as tranquil and refreshing, with a natural balance of cool and warm (blue and yellow) undertones. Green is considered the color of peace and ecology. However, there is an ';institutional'; side to green, associated with illness or Government-issued that conjure up negative emotions as do the ';slimy'; or bilious greens.

    How the color green effects us physically and mentally

    * Soothing

    * Relaxing mentally as well as physically

    * Helps alleviate depression, nervousness and anxiety

    * Offers a sense of renewal, self-control and harmony

    Yellow shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness. Shades of golden yellow carry the promise of a positive future. Yellow will advance from surrounding colors and instill optimism and energy as well as spark creative thoughts.

    How the color yellow effects us mentally and physically

    * Mentally stimulating

    * Stimulates the nervous system

    * Activates memory

    * Encourages communication

    Orange, a close relative of red, sparks more controversy than any other hue. There is usually strong positive or negative association to orange and true orange generally elicits a stronger ';love it'; or ';hate it'; response than other colors. Fun and flamboyant orange radiates warmth and energy. Interestingly, some of the tones of orange such as terra cotta, peach or rust have very broad appeal.

    How the color orange effects us mentally and physically

    * Stimulates activity

    * Stimulates appetite

    * Encourages socialization

    Meaning of the Color Red

    Red has more personal associations than any other color. Recognized as a stimulant red is inherently exciting and the amount of red is directly related to the level of energy perceived. Red draws attention and a keen use of red as an accent can immediately focus attention on a particular element.

    How the color red effects us mentally and physically

    * Increases enthusiasm

    * Stimulates energy

    * Encourages action and confidence

    * A sense of protection from fears and anxiety

    Purple embodies the balance of red simulation and blue calm. This dichotomy can cause unrest or uneasiness unless the undertone is clearly defined at which point the purple takes on the characteristics of its undertone. A sense of mystic and royal qualities, purple is a color often well liked by very creative or eccentric types and is the favorite color of adolescent girls.

    How the color purple effects us mentally and physically

    * Uplifting

    * Calming to mind and nerves

    * Offers a sense of spirituality

    * Encourages creativity

    Brown says stability, reliability, and approachability. It is the color of our earth and is associated with all things natural or organic.

    How the color brown effects us physically and mentally

    * Feeling of wholesomeness

    * Stability

    * Connection with the earth

    * Offers a sense orderliness

    White projects purity, cleanliness, and neutrality. Doctors don white coats, brides traditionally were white gowns and a white picket fence surrounds a safe and happy home.

    How the color white effects us mentally and physically

    * aids mental clarity

    * encourages us to clear clutter or obstacles

    * evokes purification of thoughts or actions

    * enables fresh beginnings

    Gray is timeless, practical, and solid. A longstanding favorite suit color, gray can mix well with any color. Although well like and often worn, people rarely name gray as a favorite color possibly because Gray also is associated with loss or depression.

    How the color black effects us physically and mentally

    * unsettling

    * expectant

    Black is authoritative and powerful; because black can evoke strong emotions too much can be overwhelming. A classic color for clothing possibly because it makes the wearer appear thinner and more sophisticated.

    How the color black effects us physically and mentally

    * feeling inconspicious

    * a restful emptiness

    * mysterious evoking a sense of potential and possibility.

    Now that you're armed with all that info, what color are you going to paint the classroom???

    Enjoy your school year!
    Bright, bold colors with painting.

    If you have a large bulletin board you could do just about anything. Whatever the theme is for the month let the kids get involved with decorations. Season's, Holiday's, Picture of each student. Let them pick out the back ground for their own pictures. Rotate the jobs the kids are doing, so they all get a chance to add their own ideas.

    Poasters are easy to work with and can be changed often enough to fit themes and projects like what they are studying in science, social studies, history etc.

    Don't know what grade we're talking about, but these are some ideas that you could always modify.

    Difference between Automotive and House (Decorative) Paint?

    What is the difference between Automotive Enamel and House (Decorative) Enamel Paints?

    Can House (Decorative) paint be used on vehicles such as cars, buses and even cranes?

    What problems if any would there be if this is done?

    Thanking you in advance.Difference between Automotive and House (Decorative) Paint?
    There is a big difference. House paint is designed to adhear to wood. Automotive paint is designer to adhear to metal. If you paint a vehicle with house paint, it will fade quickly, won't shine very well and peel off. It is not designed to ';bite'; into the metal. It is also not designed to handle the extreme weather conditions that an automobile paint finish has to endure. For example.. high speed winds, high speed rain, road salt, ect.. Automotive paint is also thinner than house paint. I would not recommend painting your car with house paint. It will be very expensive to repair the damage to the exsiting paint.Difference between Automotive and House (Decorative) Paint?
    What is the difference? Everything

    What problems would there be? The paint will fall off.

    How do you glue a piece of decorative wood to a painted door?

    the bedroom doors. I tried gorilla glue, it didn't work.

    thanksHow do you glue a piece of decorative wood to a painted door?
    It depends how heavy this piece you want to glue is. Paint doesn't hold all glues that well, as you noticed.

    To get a better grip, you may want to sand down the areas on the door that will have the glue adhere to.

    I would use wood glue, good ol' Elmer's.

    I would take the door OFF the hinges though, and lay it flat somewhere. THEN glue the piece on so it sits on top of the door overnight. Then rehang the door.How do you glue a piece of decorative wood to a painted door?
    You don't have to use glue-- if the decor piece is light as stated than go to the store, hardware or craft and buy some super strong double sticky back tape-- this will work--

    before you apply it make sure you wash the area well , then dry--- you will not be disappointed

    How do I paint a decorative interior concrete floor?

    Make sure you clean the concrete first. You can get an acid wash that etches the surface so that a primer/bonding agent will adhear properly. If you don't do this the paint will flake off. As far as the finish it just depends on what you want. Staining is a great alternitive to paint. Spraying gives a different look then rolling or brushing. Concrete paint needs to breathe so that any moisture that comes up through the concrete can escape. Take a look at some web sites, the pictures alone might give you some good ideas.

    An answerer said, use ceramic paint. Is that acrylic paint? Is it as good for the purpose? Or is there a specific ';ceramic paint?';Re: painting elf, owl, dwarf one-foot high decorative statues?
    I have a friend that does the same. He uses special sign paint. I would contact a paint store for advise for the proper way to proceed.Re: painting elf, owl, dwarf one-foot high decorative statues?
    if the piece is to be fired use a ceramic glaze and fire at the recommended for that color or brand of paint. if you are not firing your statue use non firing ceramic paint or tole paint found at a craft store. the small bottles of tole paint run about 69 cents to about 2 dollars.

  • Can you use regular spray paint with decorative stencils?

    I want to use decorative stencils on my walls and don't own an air sprayer. Will I get a clean stencil design using regular spray paint cans?Can you use regular spray paint with decorative stencils?
    You will probably get a clean stencil as long as you hold the can far enough that you can do ';misting'; coats. However, your stencil will build up with paint and bleeding will start at the edges as they become less sharp.

    I don't think you'll be able to clean the stencil off as easily or if at all with the spray paint. See if you can rent a sprayer.Can you use regular spray paint with decorative stencils?
    The tighter and flatter the stecil is held against the wall the less bleedng you will have.
    Hi:

    Yes, you can. But you must clean them very good after so many spray paintings or when your done with them or they stary have a build up of paint on the edge of the stencils.

    spray shellac on the bleeding two light coats prime paintPainting an old decorative metal ceiling, used a coat of primer and rust is bleeding through...reprime?
    Rust is tricky. Many many methods have been tried in restoration with varied success. I have had success with the following.

    1. Polyurethane spray or brushed on

    2. Kilz paint as a primer

    3. Sanding it off which would be tricky on a tin ceiling I would use mask goggles ect.

    There is a product I'm going to try for a badly rusted old Porcelain on cast iron sink that has been recommended to me.

    Anyway good luck on this...how large of an area is rusted? I may have another suggestion if I know how much rust you're looking at.Painting an old decorative metal ceiling, used a coat of primer and rust is bleeding through...reprime?
    We scrubbed the rust off our barstools with crumpled aluminum foil and it really works. You should sand or buff it all off and start over because the rust will continue to spread.
    Check out a paint called ';Kilz'; for covering stains and, I think, rust.

    Decorative creative painting techiques?

    There are too many to name. There are lots of great books out there in hardward stores and paint stores to give you ideas. I love stripes in any shape or form, colorwashing is really great too. I think that sponging is done though, there are way more attractive options. Just try it, it's fun and can always be painted over if it doesn't work out.
    Try a faux finish!

    Or look on www.behr.com, they have tons of great ideas.
    The best thing about painting and techniques is that you can come up wth your own! Buy several paints and try different items from around the house and just play around and see what you come up with. YOu may even invest in a sheet or two of wall board (pretty inexpensive) so you can see exactly how it would look. Dont be afraid to use several coats! Underlying coats can shine through and drasticly change the effect! Not only will it be fun, but you can honestly say that you came up with the idea on your own. A great converstation starter for parties, too!

    What to charge for decorative painting?

    I have done some decorative painting in my home and some of my friends, but have never charged them. I have now been asked to paint a commercial location and they will pay me. I am not sure what to charge. The space is approximately 350 square feet, but includes several small locations, i.e. over doors and windows, etc. The process will be a 2 or 3 color ';mottling'; and I anticipate at least 60 hours for the project. I am not a professional, but she likes my work. I do not want to over charge her, but at the same time, do not want to sell myself short. Any advise?What to charge for decorative painting?
    We had a decorative painter redo our kitchen cabinets. It cost about $3500. We are getting ready to have our living room and entry way repainted in one color. It is a space of about 1600 square feet of painted surface. We have a quote from a very good painter to do the work for $1000 plus materials. I'm guessing he will take about two days to do the prep and painting.

    If you think it will take 60 hours, then it will probably be more like 80 hours. At $35 an hour, that would be somewhere between $2100 and $2800.

    You might consider offering to do the job for something like $4000 with the understanding that you will reduce the price for every hour under 80 that it takes at a rate of $25.

    One final idea. Have you simply asked some local painters what they charge per hour? I have guess $35 but it could easily be $50.What to charge for decorative painting?
    Oil Field Trash has a good idea. How about this: Tell her you'd charge $2500. Then tell her if she'll put a small TASTEFUL plaque near it with your name and phone, you'll do it for $1500.

    Or, another way is to charge her full price, and then you'll pay her $50 for every referral that hires you.

    What is the best and cheapest way to get a decorative paint scheme on walls? No idea how to do it. HELP!?

    I am painting the whole house, we are starting with the bathroom.What is the best and cheapest way to get a decorative paint scheme on walls? No idea how to do it. HELP!?
    There are some great faux painting techniques that you could try, some as easy as ragging with paint and glaze. Sometimes local paint and wallpaper stores will offer mini-classes in the basic techniques, and Barnes and Noble, Lowe's and other big-name hardware stores carry how-to books on the subject. I like the ones by Sunset and Better Homes and Gardens. It's best to practice on a small board of some sort 'till you get the hang of it. Stenciling is kinda out of ';vogue'; right now but I still like it. It can be used for a pretty and very inexpensive border, like in a bathroom.

    Taping off alternating stripes on one wall in a room is fairly easy. You do the math and then, with the aid of painter's tape, you roll bands of clear, non-yellowing, acrylic varnish over your base coat. Remove the tape and you've got a tone-on-tone striped wall. I've found that 6';-wide stripes look best.What is the best and cheapest way to get a decorative paint scheme on walls? No idea how to do it. HELP!?
    Don't trust Lowes, Home depot, ect for anything. Go to Sherwin Williams, Kelly Moore, or Anchor. Its a simple process for most faux painting, unless you want to do a realistic marble or other technique thats gonna need knowlege of glazes, oil over latex, latex over oil ect.

    Best thing to do is get a 4'x4' sheet of drywall and the paints/supplies and just practice and experiment. After you learn one technique, others wont be so intimidating.
    decorative painting can be any of a couple hundred techniques,and I must say all the ones that look cool are pretty difficult ,you could do the ragging,sponging or color washing as mentioned above but even they are somewhat out of vogue, the most popular things are now the trowled on coatings,as in the plasters and marbles, metallics with a glaze over the top are also popular,but they are not easy to learn and take some practice,for a good look that is easy to learn ,try Lusterstone ,you will probably love the look, it is the hottest product I apply these days. There is special concrete paint. It is weather resistant and comes in a variety of colors.

    For 'high traffic' areas an epoxy ester or a 2 component catalyzed epoxy coating would be useful.

    You could even do the design in chalk and use the epoxy to fix it in place. But that would be pretty experimental.

    There are individual chapters of decorative painters throughout the US - and the world. If you live close to one you will find lots of kindred spirits. Most of the chapters have lending libraries with patterns and books from all the well known decorative painters. Look for your local chapter at http://decorativepainters.org/chapters/c鈥?/a>

    There is a main convention for decorative painters every year through the Society of Decorative Painters - The next one will be in Wichita, Kansas in May 2010. There are several regional conferences as well. I know of ones in Columbus, Ohio, New England, and there is one in the Northwest region too. If you join a local chapter I'm sure they will help you find more. When you go to conventions you will find so much inspiration in the trade show!

    Having gone on to other things... I have two (I think, I need to find them), three ring binders with decorative painting packets and designs or which I would gladly give and mail to you. I have had them for years and no longer have any use for them but didn't just want to throw them away or give them to goodwill. I think they may be put to good use in your class. If you would like them, contact me at catswhisper@bellsouth.net I will give you my websites so you can check me out for verification.
    Hi Sue- I too am a semi retired Decorative Artist. My main push was murals but I spliced in handcut stencils and faux finishing. Back when I started in the 80's, you had to send for everything! Now days, you can get faux finishing supplies at Lowes and other paint retailers. Acrylic craft paints work great for tole and other decorative needs-Jo Anns, Micheals and actually Walmart-which has the best pricing are good. They also carry blank stencil paper and Micheals carries a line of tools for woodwork plus stencil cutting hot burners. You know of course that one can also use razor/blade knives.

    I always went to the local plastics wherehouse. There I could get clear plastic at different weights on the roll and paid by the foot. I liked it as I could trace my patterns easier through it from the sketches I had made, using sharpies.I could cut it the size I wanted too.

    As for patterns-check out DOVER books. They have a great line of soft bound books on many many patterns and designs and run around 5-7.00. You can find then through major retailers-book stores like Barnes and Noble.

    Check out Cheap Joes Art Stuff-they have a site.

    Also Oriental Trading Company and other online art suppliers. I always make up my own kits for my students so I'm not quite sure what you are looking for. I do think the Dover books could be a great boon though! Good Luck!
    Hi Sue! I'm sure you should be able to find these supplies at any good arts and crafts store. If there is a Michaels store near you, check them out. I know that the prices there are more expensive on some items, so you really have to know and price check on items. I needed a yard stick and WalMart didn't carry them where I live so I looked at Michaels and was shocked at the price and then went to Staples/Business Depot in the same plaza and got the yardstick for $3.00 less than Michaels. You might want to look for online distributors of the items that you need as the prices are always less than in a retail store. Check out these web sites to see if they have what you need:

    What is the best way to start learning?

    The best way to start learning is to attend classes. Taking lessons has the following advantages:

    Structured learning - teachers usually structure lessons to build in the different skills involved in decorative painting. You will learn new skills every time you attend a class.

    Discipline - attending regular classes means you make time for yourself to become a good artist! You learn at your own pace but you paint on a consistent basis.

    Relaxing atmosphere - in a painting class, no one is under pressure to finish their work in a hurry! You paint in a relaxing atmosphere. If you are fast, of course you accomplish more during a class. If you are industrious, you can do homework after the class...otherwise you just continue at the next class.

    Learning environment - you are with others who are trying to accomplish the same thing - learning to do something they were not able to do before. Being in a group helps you to learn from each other and keeps you motivated.

  • I need advice for decorative painting on an outdoor wood project.?

    I have been asked to paint a swing set. An exterior satin finished latex has already been purchased, for the basecoat. I am planning to use my acrylics for the decorative painting. But I am not sure how to finish it. Can I just use a water sealing product (ex: Thompson's Waterseal), or should I use a clear coat? If a clearcoat is the way to go, are there any suggestions on which one to use and how long after I paint should I wait to apply it? I really want this to be durable and lasting. It is for a very special little girl, my grand-daughter. Thank you to everyone who chooses to help me. Peace!I need advice for decorative painting on an outdoor wood project.?
    Use the acrylic sealant that you can buy at any paint store or arts and crafts store. Wait until it COMPLETLY drys (your creation) then apply the sealant. Let that dry and apply a second coat. And try this after the acrylic sealants are completely dried and coated. Put a polyurathan seal over all of it. It will smooth it out and have an EXTREME lasting quality. You'd have to give that swingset a lot of torture to remove a couple coats of the poly...Good luck!!!I need advice for decorative painting on an outdoor wood project.?
    Get J.W. painters finishing wax. After you have decided the best varnish to put over the painting apply the finishing wax and I would apply a spray varnish and this wax every 6 months or so more often. (I apply to all wood products and I apply to all my wood seasonal out door decor before I put them outside each season) It repels the water and keeps the painting in nice shape. J.W. has a website but I don't know what it is. You can buy the wax at www.vikingwoodcrafts.com.

    Happy Painting!

    UPDATE: In the June 2007 Issue of PaintWorks magazine there is a very helpful and informative article by the CEO (Sandra Croy) of JW Etc. On varnishing and types of varnish and what to use to protect wood products. I thought it was very informative and would be very helpful for your project. For instance she tells you when to varnish and how to varnish and what to varnish with for different things. She even tells you when to use Matte Finish, Satin Finish and Gloss Finish! Which I never knew... just always used Satin. Good luck.
    Unfortunately, there is nothing that you can paint on wood that will last a really long time. However, hopefully you used a very high quality exterior paint rated with a 25 year life. Your acrylics should have been high end, light fast artist grade, and not the less expensive varieties. After that, you can seal with a polymer spray meant expressly for acrylics. Home Depot used to carry it. I used it on a public art piece and it worked well. It comes in matte or gloss. Good luck!

    Can I do decorative painting on previously finished/varnished antiques?

    I have an old dresser, probably from the 30's, that I want to do some decorative painting on. I'm planning to use regular acrylic paints. Do I need to sand the spots I'll be painting and prime them in any way, or can I just paint directly over the old stain and varnish? What kind of sealer should I use on the whole piece when I'm done? I'd like to avoid stripping the whole piece, I like the color and the way it looks, I just want to add to it.Can I do decorative painting on previously finished/varnished antiques?
    I never paint over varnished furniture. I always sand it down and prime it.

    The parts that get painted (if you want the best look and the best quality finish) need to be sanded, primed, painted, then sealed.

    If you want the parts that you paint to have the same kind of finish (like, gloss) you can buy different sheens of sealer. There is, satin finish, semi-gloss and high-gloss. If the unpainted finished wood is not shiny at all you can wax the painted part using paste finishing wax. Minwax brand is good.Can I do decorative painting on previously finished/varnished antiques?
    Yes, use the acrylics and then top coat with an oil based poly, preferably a wipe on poly. Zar makes a great wipe on oil based poly. Find a dealer near you. www.ugl.com/zar/...
    I'd use oil paints. Most acrylics are not designed to go atop oil-based finishes. Test the dresser to find out what is on there. Denatured alcohol(found out any hardware or paint store) removes latex finishes. Dab some on a cloth and rub a test spot in a discreet spot. if the finish comes off, it's latex, if not oil-based.
    You can paint directly over the old finish, and then cover with a clear acrylic when dry.

    A word of warning; just make sure that the antique you are painting on isn't some old, valuable antique ~ once you alter the original finish, you'll lower the value significantly.

    Decorative Painting?

    I want to add some decorative painting to a stepping stool that I am making for my daughter. It is a round wooden stool that I have spray painted a tan color and then I decopaged her name on the top, but it still needs something else. Any suggestions?Decorative Painting?
    dip her toes in paint and get her to climb the steps and leave her cute little toes prints behind. The top end of her foot or however much of her foot that would touch the steps.... precious.....

    hang on... reading your question more carefully I think maybe its not like a ladder... sorry... please ignore my previous idea, that wont work...

    maybe little flowers all over made of little dots, you know one red for the centre and 6 blue around to make a flower ( colours of your childs choice, of course )Decorative Painting?
    I think they are called rub-ons. They are in the craft stores. You turn them over and rub a popsicle stick over them and they press onto your project. They have many different things. animals, dora, letters and numbers, shapes, things. theyre great.

    If she is gonna use it for a step stool maybe you could buy those foam shapes and glue them to it. They are like real flat fun foam but they come in animal shapes and stuff. This would make the bench non slip on top.

    hope this helps.
    pick colors from her room or her favourite three colors and blend them to compliment the shade of tan, do you need to dull the colors or maybe paint on full strength then antique glaze over the whole stool?

    Is her room a particular style?Choose half moons and hearts or diamonds to go with a country style, ponies for a My Little Pony room, or butterflies and faeries.
